Start with your CAS
To apply for a UK Student visa you need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed student sponsor. Your university issues it after you accept an unconditional offer, meet its conditions and usually pay a deposit.
Check every detail on your CAS carefully: your name, passport number, course, start date, tuition fees and any fees already paid. The information you give in your visa application must match it exactly.

Showing money: the 28-day rule
Unless you are exempt, you must show enough money to pay your remaining course fees plus a set amount for living costs. The living-cost amount is higher for study in London than elsewhere in the UK; GOV.UK publishes the current figures.
- Hold the money for 28 consecutive days. The balance must never drop below the required amount during that period.
- Apply within 31 days of the closing date of the 28-day period shown on your bank statement.
- Use accepted account holders: the account can be yours or, with extra documents, your parent’s.
- Education loans from an accepted financial institution can also be used, with the loan letter.

TB test, health surcharge and English
A realistic timeline

Accept an offer, pay the deposit, get your NOC, and start the 28-day funds period.
Receive your CAS, take the TB test and apply for the visa online.

You can apply up to six months before your course starts. Decisions from outside the UK usually take a few weeks, and faster services may be available for an extra fee.
Questions students ask
Can I bring my spouse or children?
Since January 2024, most students on taught courses cannot bring dependants. Postgraduate research courses and some government-sponsored students are exceptions. Check GOV.UK for the current rules.
Will I have a credibility interview?
Your university or the Home Office may interview you about your course, finances and plans. Prepare to explain your choices clearly in your own words.
Can I work while studying?
Students on degree-level courses at a university can usually work up to 20 hours a week during term time. Your exact conditions appear on your visa, so follow them strictly.
