Australia’s Genuine Student requirement: how to write strong answers

What the Genuine Student requirement is
Australia’s Department of Home Affairs replaced the old Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) statement with the Genuine Student (GS) requirement in March 2024. Instead of a long free-form essay, you now answer targeted questions inside the Student visa (subclass 500) application.
The officer uses your answers, together with your documents, to decide whether you genuinely intend to study and whether your course makes sense for you. Short, specific and honest answers work best.

The themes your answers must cover
You may also be asked about any previous visa refusals or immigration history. Always answer these fully and truthfully.
How to write answers that convince
- Be specific: name the modules, skills or placement that matter to you, instead of general praise for Australia.
- Connect the dots: explain how your +2 or bachelor’s study, or your job, leads logically to this course.
- Show research: mention what you compared, such as other providers, other countries or courses in Nepal, and why this option fits better.
- Be realistic about the future: describe the kind of role or further study you are aiming for and why the qualification helps.
- Match your documents: every date, amount and job title in your answers must agree with your evidence.
Write it yourself. Copied templates and generic AI-written text are easy to recognise. Your own clear, simple English is far more credible.
Study gaps, course changes and refusals
- Study gap: explain what you did during the gap and support it with work letters, training certificates or other evidence. See how to explain a study gap.
- Changing field: if you move from, say, science to business, explain the reason clearly and show how your background still helps.
- Lower-level course: if you already have a degree and are applying for a diploma, explain the practical benefit and why it is not a step backwards.
- Previous refusal: address the original concern directly and show what has changed since then.
Questions students ask
Do I still need a separate GTE statement?
No. The GTE statement was replaced. Answer the Genuine Student questions in the application form instead, and follow any extra request from your education provider.
Will my education provider check my answers too?
Many Australian providers run their own genuine student assessment before issuing a CoE, so prepare to explain your plans to them as well.
