Showing funds for a student visa from Nepal: savings, loans and sponsors
How Nepali students can show genuine funds for a student visa: bank balances, education loans, sponsor documents, income evidence and the red flags to avoid.
Show money that is genuinely available, explain where it came from with documents, and prove your sponsor's relationship to you. The source matters as much as the amount.
What “genuine funds” really means
Every study destination asks you to prove you can pay tuition and living costs. The amount is only half of the test. Visa officers also check three things:
A large amount that appeared in an account a few weeks ago, with no explanation, raises more concern than a smaller amount built up over years.
Types of financial evidence
- Savings and fixed deposits: a bank balance certificate plus a statement covering several months, so the officer can see how the balance grew.
- Education loans: a sanction letter from a bank or financial institution showing the amount, the borrower and the purpose. Keep disbursement records too.
- Salary income: an employment letter, salary slips and tax records under the employee’s PAN.
- Business income: registration certificate, PAN or VAT certificate, audited accounts and tax clearance.
- Rental income: the rental agreement, proof of property ownership and records of rent received.
- Agricultural income: an income certificate from the municipality or rural municipality, with land ownership documents.
A property valuation shows family wealth, but it is not cash you can spend on fees. Use it to support your story, not as your main proof of funds.
Sponsor documents
Most Nepali students are supported by parents or close relatives. For each sponsor, prepare:
- A signed affidavit of support stating how much they will provide.
- A relationship verification certificate from the ward office showing how the sponsor is related to you.
- The sponsor’s own bank and income documents from the list above.
- A copy of the sponsor’s citizenship certificate.
Keep it simple. One or two strong sponsors with clear income are more convincing than many relatives each adding a small amount.
Mistakes that lead to refusals
- Sudden large deposits with no document explaining where they came from.
- Borrowed money placed in an account just for the visa and withdrawn later. This is misleading and can lead to a refusal or a ban.
- Income that does not match lifestyle, for example a small declared salary supporting a very large loan repayment.
- Fake or altered documents. Banks and embassies verify records. Never submit anything you cannot stand behind.
- Old statements. Many countries only accept financial documents issued within a recent period, so check the date rules before you apply.

How much money do I need to show?
It depends on the country, your course fees, your length of stay and whether family members travel with you. Each government publishes its current figures, and they change, so always check the official website before you apply.
Can I use a loan and family savings together?
Yes. Many students combine an education loan with parents’ savings. Show each source clearly, with its own documents.
Do I need to keep the money in the account after the visa?
Funds are meant for your studies and living costs. Plan a realistic budget, because you are expected to support yourself while abroad.
