IELTS or PTE: which English test should you take?
Compare IELTS Academic and PTE Academic for study abroad: test format, scoring, results time, acceptance and how to choose the right test for you.
Both tests are widely accepted. Choose IELTS if you prefer speaking with a person, PTE if you are comfortable on a computer and need quick results - after confirming your institution accepts it.
The key differences
Both IELTS Academic and PTE Academic test listening, reading, writing and speaking, and both are widely accepted for study abroad. The big differences are how you take the test and how it is scored.
Make sure your test is accepted
Before comparing formats, confirm that both your institution and your visa accept the test.
- Your course page: check the exact English requirement, including the minimum score in each skill, not just the overall score.
- Your visa route: some countries set their own rules. For example, a UK Student visa application for a course below degree level may need a Secure English Language Test (SELT) such as IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI.
- Validity: results are generally accepted for two years from the test date, but some institutions set shorter limits.
A PTE score is not the same as an IELTS band. Institutions publish their own accepted scores for each test, so use their table, not an online converter.
Which test suits you better?
IELTS may suit you if you speak more naturally with a person than a microphone, you prefer writing by hand (paper test), or your institution lists IELTS only.
PTE may suit you if you type faster than you write, you are comfortable speaking clearly to a computer in a busy test room, or you need results quickly for an application deadline.
Try both formats. Take a free official practice test for each. The format where your practice score is higher is usually the right choice for you.
How to prepare effectively
- Learn the task types before practising. Many marks are lost simply by misunderstanding what a question wants.
- Time yourself in every practice session, because both tests are strict on time.
- Get feedback on writing and speaking, the two skills students find hardest to judge on their own.
- Book the test with a buffer of a few weeks before your application deadline, in case you need to retake it.

Is PTE easier than IELTS?
Neither is easier for everyone. Each tests the same skills in a different format. Choose the format that matches how you work best.
How long should I prepare?
It depends on your current level. Students already close to their target often need a few weeks of focused practice; others need a few months.
Can I use a Duolingo or TOEFL score instead?
Some institutions accept other tests. Check your course page and visa rules before booking any test.
